Educational Outings

The Hastings Auto Restorers Society Inc (HARS) plays an important role in educating the community about what vehicles were like 100 years ago. The club was formed in 1979 by half a dozen members from Wauchope, Port Macquarie and Camden Haven. It now has 120 members who meet on the first Wednesday of the month at the Senior Citizens Centre.  An elected committee is in charge of running the club and organising various outings.  HARS vice president Chris Whalley said the group members drive their cars after the meeting to various locations in the Port Macquarie-Hastings region to have lunch. He said it is very much a social group.  Members restore cars which are aged 30 years and older to as close as possible to their original condition.  The oldest model currently in the group is a 1908 Reynolds vehicle, over 100 years old.  A lot of the vehicles have been inherited by members, passed down from their ancestors.  Mr Whalley said they are often not easy cars to drive, compared to the cars of today’s standard.  Some members are also avid collectors and restoring cars has become their passion.  “Sometimes people discover a wreck in the bush, they get it out and restore it by seeking out parts from all over the world,”  Mr Whalley said.  Swap meets, he said are a great opportunity for people to gain access to vehicle parts from members of the community.  “Sometimes farmers might have parts which have been sitting in their sheds for 20 or 30 years,” he said.  “It’s about being in the right place at the right time.”  The internet also provides an avenue for members to purchase parts for American cars and European models. The club will attend the Australia Day event at Town Green where their restored vehicles will be on display.  On June 4 the group is holding their next swap meet event at the Port Macquarie Race Club.  The group would love more members to join the club, especially from the younger generation who they view as the future of carrying on the restoration process.  For more information contact Chris Whalley on 0409 421 411. Outings Educational outings in san antonioEducational
